Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the unclaimed money register?

Unclaimed money and missing shareholders is a constant challenge for our organisations and millions of dollars continues to go unclaimed.

We wanted a solution that would enable members to search multiple trusts and incorporations without the challenge of locating and scouring the world wide web. We invite trusts and organisations to submit their lists to be included in the search register.  As lists are submitted, they are processed to be searchable.

The register will similarly provide organisations, people, beneficiaries and descendants have the opportunity to find out where they are connected. If you have tupuna that are coming up in Search results, this is a place you connect to. The how, why and when is all up to you to find out but building connections is what we are all about!

Simply type in the name of your self, parent, grandparent etc and get results (where available) of people that have unclaimed money. If you recognise or happen to be one of the people listed, contact the organisation directly to make enquiries.

What is Unclaimed Money?

Nationwide we have multi-millions going unclaimed that in some cases dates back to the mid 1900's. You'll find money is often held in the names of our tūpuna when successions haven't taken place or when those who have succeeded don't realise the money is unclaimed.
In the case of māori land, the money is typically from dividends that have gone through a process of being paid out to beneficiaries by trusts and incorporations.

The common reasons for money going unclaimed are:
  • If a beneficiary has not registered with the organisation
  • Beneficiaries haven't updated their contact details
  • Successors don't realise money is unclaimed from their tūpuna
  • Successions haven't been completed

In the case of incorporations; it is common for these to go unsucceeded for generations as these are not always included when the Māori Land Court process searches for succession applications. Each incorporation requires succession to be completed for shares to be distributed but in the case of most trusts, you still need to advise of unclaimed dividends they hold under your tūpuna name to receive those outstanding funds.

Another thing to remember is that there are also settlement trusts that are relatively modern in the scheme of Māori land affairs and most of their beneficiaries descend from a core tūpuna list. There are many unregistered beneficiaries that are not aware they could be, should be or may be beneficiaries. This is an area that definitely needs some further education around whakapapa and whenua connections to help reconnect our people to their representing organisations.

In general, money is classed as unclaimed after a certain length of time has passed since the organisation holding the money has been able to contact the owner. The length of time depends on the type of money and organisation.

Māori Incorporations' can declare dividends and they manage their own unclaimed dividends register.

TE TUMU PAEROA - MĀORI TRUSTEE PROCESS
A book is produced each year by the Māori Trustee listing accounts that are in credit of the persons named. Although the list can be accessed at the Māori Land Court and Te Puni Kokiri offices, moneys must be claimed from the Māori Trustee.

Under the Māori Trustee Act 1953, if the Māori Trustee (Te Tumu Paeroa) holds money in the common fund for at least 10 years and no claim has been made for that money during that time it will become unclaimed money.

To ensure you can receive any funds you may be entitled to and statements from TTP, they need up-to-date bank account information, contact details, your IRD number and in some cases your resident withholding tax (RWT) rate. This information will help ensure you are taxed at the correct rate on any income you or your whānau trust earns.
